Why is visioning such a big deal for leaders?  A clear vision serves as a prism for making decisions and guiding actions on the path to the future.  It inspires and gives a purpose for employees.   The most productive employees want to know their work will be meaningful longer term and that their own dreams can come true.

Let’s use an analogy. If you were the travel agent for a group going on vacation, where would you begin?    I would start with understanding where they wanted to go and what was attractive about that place.  The leader of the group says they want to go to the Greek islands because of cerulean blue domed rooftops, ancient archaeological attractions and the sapphire blue waters.   Can you picture the destination?  Can you now make decisions on where in Greece you would consider and what tours you would recommend as they spend time there?  The picture has been painted of the future and everyone can see and feel it in their minds.

Next consider current examples of organizational visions.

ToysRUs “to put joy in kids’ hearts and a smile on parents’ faces”
Microsoft “A personal computer in every home running Microsoft software.”
Nike “To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world.”
Avon “To be the company that best understands and satisfies the product, service and self-fulfillment needs of women — globally.”
Miami Project to Cure Paralysis “cure spinal cord injury”
Hair Salon “Our salon will change the way you think about a haircut. Full service comfort, friendly staff, a relaxing atmosphere, and the best prices in town give you an experience that will leave you glowing both inside and out.”
